The "drugs" subject is too multifaceted to answer with broad brush responses. This can often open the door to severe abuse patterns over time. Many people maintain a well-deserved fear of harder street drugs and therefore use them sparingly while simultaneously viewing legalized or "soft" drugs as being benign. The amount used and the frequency of usage play a huge role here. This includes alcoholics and potheads who can be just as difficult as any other drug addict - in fact within my own family and social circles, I have observed more issues with these two "legal" groups of abusers than any other. I don't demonize drug usage at all (I've used most drugs that didn't require a needle at least once) although I may choose to not form close relationships with those who do use drugs on a frequent basis either. Gambling is gambling after all - not just with addiction, but also with making terrible choices while under the influence (collateral damage). Few of us are this sensible and most of us "dabble" with all sorts of substances throughout our lives - often having minimal long term adverse effects. We all know that the rule of thumb is to avoid any drug usage - great advice, but not realistic and frankly not a life that I would have enjoyed. Also like any drug - the amount used, the frequency of usage and the method of consumption (injection verses inhalation, etc.) all have a huge impact on how destructive the drug could be on a person's health, career and/or relationships. Like any and all drugs, methamphetamine can either be completely destructive or used seldomly in small doses and cause minimal damage. There's really no good answer to this problem, although it does seem like the US has a propensity for choosing the worst answers. Addicts won't like that, and the illegal market will continue. If you're going to require a prescription, that implies control over dosage, as with methadone.

Even opioids, which have more side effects even with therapeutic doses than benzos, will fly off the shelves because they feel good at first. If you're going to legalize "all drugs" as some propose, does that mean without a prescription? Does it include benzodiazepines? Because, if you do that, half the country will be addicted in a matter of months and stay addicted forever. Those are the most likely to be abused by people who are not die-hard addicts. I do agree that some people are prone to self-destructiveness and/or addiction, but some drugs feel really good with few immediate bad side effects. R14, we still have all those problems, and they tend to kill their users long before smoking gets a chance to.
